It's pretty hard to see how close spring is to being here with the high temperatures not getting above freezing in Charlotte, NC today but spring is indeed coming!
Before we know it, the first of the seasons trees will be blooming and the honeybees will be bringing in nectar. When this happens, I huge shift happens in the hive. The bees go from clustering and keeping warm to building up their numbers in preparation for the main nectar flow, which here in Charlotte, NC starts at the beginning of April.
Every year, we at Queen's Orders Honey make splits off of our overwintered honeybee colonies and sell them in the form of nucleus colonies aka nucs! They are called such because they're everything the hive needs to get started. Honeybee nucs can double in size in a week in peak season! Being so this is the recommended way to start with bees every year or even if this is your first year.
All nucs come with 5 frames of honeybees, containing a mixture of adult bees, brood aka developing bees, food in the form of nectar and pollen, and a mated queen from this year. Queen's can even be marked upon request.
If this is something you're interested in, you can reserve your nuc by using the link here. By paying this fee, you are holding your spot in line for when the nucs are ready to be picked up at our apiary in Huntersville, NC. This deposit will go to the total of the nuc upon picking it up. These usually go quick so make sure you get yours while we still have them in stock!
Once ordered, we will reach out to you and coordinate pickup. Estimated time of pick up is around the first week of April though that is subject to change slightly depending on what Mother Nature decides to do with the Charlotte, NC region this winter.
If any questions about the bees or the nucs please refer to this link where you can also purchase a nuc with paying a deposit. Hope to hear from you soon and stay warm out there!
